LE+GACY
Giving Meaning to Memory
Welcome aboard LE+GACY – Giving Meaning to Memory, ICDET’s cultural and historical engagement program.
LE+GACY is an invitation to young people to step into the footprints of the past, listen to its voices, and bring its lessons into the present. From ancient ruins and monuments, to the memories of grandparents and the stories hidden in archives, LE+GACY transforms history from something we read in books into something we live, feel, and create with.
We believe history is not only about dates and events. It is about the people who shaped them, the values they defended, and the traditions they passed on. Every mural painted, every story told, every memory preserved is part of a living chain that connects generations.
LE+GACY helps young people discover where they come from, who they are, and how their choices will shape the legacy of tomorrow.
Through creative heritage projects, cultural expeditions, intergenerational encounters, and youth dialogues, participants learn that heritage is not static. It is dynamic, evolving, and deeply personal. By engaging with cultural symbols, local traditions, and European shared memory, they discover how identity is built — and how diversity enriches it.
LE+GACY is not about looking back with nostalgia. It is about carrying the past forward: reinterpreting it through art, reflecting on it through dialogue, and reimagining it for future generations.
In LE+GACY, memory becomes action. Tradition becomes innovation. And the past becomes a living compass for the future.

Memory Mapping
Heritage is not only in monuments — it lives in the places, streets, and traditions we interact with daily. Memory Mapping invites youth to explore their surroundings and build collective maps of memories, stories, and cultural symbols.
Examples:
-
Mapping “hidden heritage” in Sofia — stories tied to markets, monuments, and family houses.
-
A village memory map where elders guide youth through cultural landmarks.
-
A digital interactive map comparing memory sites across European towns.
Voices of the Past
Every generation carries stories that risk being forgotten. Voices of the Past gives space to capture, preserve, and re-share these personal histories.
Examples:
-
A podcast series on Bulgarian traditions told by grandparents.
-
Video interviews with local artisans about crafts and heritage.
-
A travelling exhibition of portraits and quotes from elders across Europe.
Heritage Reimagined
History does not have to stay in books — it can live through art and creativity. In Heritage Reimagined, youth transform historical stories, archives, and traditions into artistic forms that speak to today’s audiences.
Examples:
-
A mural in Sofia is inspired by youth stories of revolution and change.
-
A theatre play reimagining European history through youth perspectives.
-
A VR installation that lets participants “step into” Bulgarian folklore.
European Time Machine
Europe’s history is diverse — and often remembered differently in each country. The European Time Machine challenges youth to compare how shared events are remembered across borders.
Examples:
-
A comparative exhibition on how different nations remember 1989.
-
A digital storytelling project showing how EU accession was experienced across Europe.
-
A youth dialogue circle reflecting on how memory shapes current European values.
Future of Memory
Heritage is not only about the past — it’s also about the legacy we leave for future generations. Future of Memory empowers young people to reflect on how they want to be remembered, and what traditions or innovations they will pass on.
Examples:
-
A youth-designed “Memory Capsule 2050” project stored in a local library.
-
Creative letters and artworks from today’s youth to tomorrow’s Europe.
-
A cross-generational panel: “What do we want future generations to learn from us?”
