ree

The “Youth Spaces” organization is designed specifically for the development of young adults, non-formal and informal learning, physical activity and the use of leisure time by and for young people.

This organization addresses problems and challenges which young people face such as: high levels of youth unemployment, high numbers of young people outside education, training and employment; increasing trends of populism, Euroscepticism, radicalization and aggression; social exclusion of young people;

“Youth spaces” are particularly important to society. They are a social innovation that empowers young people to realize their initiatives, creativity and values. They are also a key tool for developing social, professional and personal competences in youth.

By participating in such organizations, people find new friends, become more useful and positive for society

What makes an active citizen?

ree

Active citizenship associates with an active citizenry, having the authority to engage in flexible decision making as characterized from influential citizen participation which contains activities like voting, joining public hearings, being part of citizen boards and participating in public opinion analyses. Active citizenship means people getting involved in their local communities and democracy at all levels, from towns to cities to nationwide activity. Individuals that define themselves as active citizens have the belief that poverty, disease and famine are just as deadly and destructive as earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis. Active citizenship can be as small as a campaign to clean up your street or as big as educating young people about democratic values, skills and participation.

Active citizenship is one of the most important steps towards healthy societies especially in new democracies like Bulgaria. Youth are the core of the development process of each nation with holding the key of changing or continuing policies, but their contributions will not achieve full impact unless they are engaged in their nation as a whole. Furthermore, democracy does not only give certain rights to people, but it also suggests the “obligation” to appreciate the opinions of others. This was seen to be especially vital for youth, to teach them that they had to take account of the interests of others. Young people should be engaged to civic issues if the government allows them to do so.

No one is born a good citizen or a good democrat or a good leader; it takes time and education. --- Kofi Annan---

The future of democracy is dependent on the possibility for the young to participate in the democratic process or, paraphrasing Kofi Annan, to include young people from birth. This is directly connected to the capacity of the education system to nurture young people who are aware of their rights and responsibilities as citizens, take action for social and environmental justice, hold their governments accountable and stand up for other people’s rights.

ree

Young people might be active in their communities in many different ways. For example, some people choose to get involved in issues or causes that directly affect their lives at a local level, while others might want to do something to make a difference to a cause that has an impact globally. Lately, there has been a significant interest among young people to fight climate change. Further interests include campaigns against war crimes, discrimination and child labour. Thus, one of the most important ways for young people to become involved in the community life and become more politically active is to take action locally. In this way they will be better aware of the specific issues that have a direct impact at their personal growth and development. Participating in youth organizations, global networks and NGOs can be considered as a great option for young people to make a difference at local, national and international level. Demonstrations, strikes, and sit-ins are all ways that an active citizen might work toward the change he/she believes in. Famous activist organizations are: The Sierra Club, Amnesty International, Black Lives Matter, Professors without borders, etc.

Advice & Tips on How to Show a Good Citizenship:

  • Encourage others to make a change

  • Volunteer

  • Start a blog about local issues

  • Participate in the community

  • Stay informed about the world around you

  • Protect the environment

  • Respect the rights and property of others

  • Take responsibility for your action

  • Organize a community gathering

  • Help people in need

  • Have a good understanding of the government

To conclude, active citizenship is a combination of knowledge, attitude, skills and actions that aim to contribute to building and maintaining a democratic society. Active Citizenship supports democratic cooperation that is based on the acceptance of universal human rights and the rule of law, values diversity and includes the whole community.

Have you ever thought that programming is interesting?

Have you ever found yourself thinking that it is something you want to include in your everyday life?

Well, our participants Vasilena and Ivaylo from the YE "Gamification exchanges" share the same interest and they will share with us how they implement programming in their everyday life, how they combine it with their other activities and how they have developed their knowledge in the programming field with the help of an ERASMUS+ project.

ree

"A couple of months ago, I learnt for first time about the Erasmus+ projects through internet. Having in mind the possibilities it offers and its benefits, I searched for projects and, in the present, I have already attended two youth exchanges. They became kind of an escape world from the ordinary one where I could both develop my understanding about my surrounding and socialize with unique and astonishing people. The Erasmus+ projects always have a positive reflection on me and on my attitude towards life.

Another thing I do in my free time aside from researching and participating in youth exchanges is programming. Since l was a little child, I have had a passion about computers, logical puzzles and so on. This passion naturally turned into a desire to learn more about the topics and develop in this area. And here I am, years later studying software development in high school and improving my skills with each day. In fact, the second project (the last one I have participated till now) in which I participated in, was about Game Development and I learnt a lot about developing games in a short period of time. We had a special Hackathon day in which, divided by teams, we had to develop a game.

Another favorite thing of mine to do in my free time is drawing. I love to draw all kinds of stuff: hands, animals, faces, anatomy and etc. It gives me time to think, which I do best while working with my hands. It’s a great way to express yourself, relieve your stress and enjoy your time. I am actually quite passionate about sport activities as well. They give me the much-needed opportunity to release my energy and enjoy the day. Overall there are a lot of things I tend to do in my free time but attending projects definitely beats all the others because it simply combines them in the best way possible."

"One of my biggest passions is programming. When I was 13-14 years old, I was in my friend's place. He is like the best guy I know and we always share our ideas and activities. He wanted to show me the web site that he made. At this point in time I had no idea what was programming neither how it works. It seemed like some magic. You write some codes in a notepad, name the file. HTML and objects just pop up on the screen when you refresh the page. I was hooked instantly. The first thing I did when I got home was to find some YouTube videos on the topic and after some research, I started learning html from some trash site. The cool part was that if I got stuck at some point he helped me and explained everything as best as he could. He continued his education through the years and now he's making phone games and posts them in the Google play. Right now I'm learning python and the thrill from the studying is the same as when I started. "
